PT Cruiser shuddering and chugging coolant...help?

My boyfriend's 2007 PT Cruiser keeps going through coolant like there's no tomorrow and over heating, as well as shuddering horribly whenever we're at a stoplight or just idle. Any thoughts/suggestions?
